Job Purpose
Senior Certification Engineer is responsible for overseeing on-time approvals/certificates for AUTOMOTIVE products from Government Agencies (EPA, CARB, etc.). This includes coordinating certification activities with other Honda groups, coordinating and negotiation at various levels in the company, completing key fleet compliance government reports on-time, representing Honda at external associations, minimizing certification compliance risks and supporting all Honda activities relating to emissions automobile certification regulations.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead, oversee and approve technical certification plan and application documentation for submittal to government agencies to get required government approvals for automotive products on schedule. Lead the coordination of resolution questions promptly while accurately keeping internal stakeholders and Japan team members apprised of the government approval status. Be the lead voice for Honda during technical reporting, discussions and negotiations with government agencies on Certification topics
- Lead effort to collect and understand cross-functional information from various internal (US and Japan) sources, , interpretate specification applicability and perform calculations towards overall Honda automobile fleet emission compliance annual report preparation with and on-time submission. Work with automobile Team Lead to coordinate overall report for agency submission several times per year and for future planning purposes. Maintain documentation for this process. for robust succession planning
- Lead, oversee and approve technical certification plan and application documentation for submittal to government agencies to get required government approvals for automotive products on schedule. Resolve Lead coordination of resolution questions/issues promptly and accurately keeping internal AH stakeholders at all levels and Japan team members apprised of the government review/approval status. Be the lead voice for Honda during technical reporting, discussions, and negotiations with government agencies on Certification topics
- Become subject matter expert of government rules and regulations related to automotive environmental Certification process and applications. Review regulatory requirements and agency inquiries and identify any internal process variance towards product automobile compliance. Raise concerns and identify solutions to stakeholders with certification Manager when there is not an understanding. Assure accurate and on-time requirement to prevent non-compliance and business impact. Update Standard Operating Procedures to latest processes
- Review and approve outbound dealer and customer communications pertaining to Sales, Service & Marketing material for regulatory compliance and technical accuracy
- Coordinate and manage the daily certification tasks and activities of 1 contingent staff
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
- B.S. Degree in engineering (or related field)
- Other STEM B.S. degrees considered
- 10 years of engineering or related experience
- Critical thinking: Able to understand and coordinate complex report information from various internal data sources into one coherent story/image
- Attention to detail: Accurate input and on time documentation submissions to government agencies
- Excellent communication & interpersonal skills. Professional speaking ability to communicate concisely as Honda’s representative to government agencies and external organizations
- Continuous improvement: always looking for ways to recognize improvement and to increase efficiency and lead improvement activities
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel, including ability to design, develop and maintain sophisticated, interactive spreadsheet models with a high level of accuracy
- Ability to develop concise and easily understood PowerPoint presentations for internal and external stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to manipulate and edit in Adobe Acrobat
- Independent project management skills with good judgement on when to raise concerns to the Team Lead and management
- Excellent problem-solving skills with ambiguous information
- Knowledge of internal combustion engines & emission control systems is a plus
- Direct emissions certification experience is a plus
- Experience with government regulations & negotiation is a plus
- Knowledge of Honda automotive products a plus
