Job Purpose

The Senior Safety Engineer applies their scientific and practical knowledge of the Safety compliance field and is a leader of this discipline, in order to innovate, design, improve systems, processes, equipment, and tools in their assigned areas. As a leader within the team, this role oversees Safety characteristics in alignment with daily operations, new model, business plan, and/or innovation to achieve or exceed targets and promote safety excellence.  The Senior Safety Engineer is a subject matter expert or reached advanced certification, such as CIH, CSP, CPE, PE. The Senior Safety Engineer also provides leadership and technical support to team members, and often interfaces with leadership as a primary point of contact.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead department Plant themes and complex improvement projects for NA region
  • Serve as subject matter expert for complex safety engineering projects and proactively cycle PDCA to reduce injuries and hazards and ensure continuous improvement of safety characteristics of assigned areas
  • Leverage Safety expertise to support Plants and Department Leaders, production safety advocates and/or safety committees to achieve self-sustaining safety culture and high level of safety performance.  This role supports all regional operations
  • Accurately interpret and apply the Honda Safety Management manual including NA and HDMA policies and procedures. Participate in PDCA of policies and procedures based on technical expertise and lead or support technical workgroups.
  • Perform and document complex safety compliance activity including risk assessments, ergonomic studies, and process and equipment innovation.
  • Detailed presentation and reporting of safety activities and results including complex data analysis and trending
  • Develop personal technical expertise and professional skills

 

Qualifications, Experience, & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or other ABET-certified safety and health program or equivalent related experience
  • 6-10 years of safety experience or equivalent Honda manufacturing experience
  • Achievement of professional certification such as Advanced Safety Certificate, Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician, Certified Safety Professional, Safety Management Specialist.
  • Interpersonal relationship skills
  • Detailed understanding of major health and safety regulations and injury/illness prevention strategies
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Open to mentorship guidance for personal skill growth
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products
  • Strong planning and prioritization skills
  • Advanced data analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Complex understanding of business plan, budgeting and cost reporting.
  • Expertise with root cause analysis and implementation of countermeasures
  • Project management plan vs. actual
  • Achievement of business plan objectives
  • Safety compliance achievement
  • Development and training plan completion
